A recent study from Scotland has found that people in their 70s who followed a “Mediterranean diet” had a larger brain volume than control subjects. The participants had their brain volume measured via magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at various points over a 6-year period. 

For this study, the Mediterranean diet was described as “fruit, vegetables, cereals, legumes, and olive oil in high quantities, moderate amounts of fish, and a low intake of red meat.”
