We have previously reported on the many brain boosting powers of turmeric, a bright yellow spice that’s often found in curry. Recent research has found that aromatic-turmerone, a compound found in turmeric, may help improve the brain’s production of new nerve cells and stem cells. This process, in turn, could help the brain repair itself following a trauma.

Interestingly, most of the previous research on turmeric’s brain boosting effects has focused on a different compound called curcumin, not on aromatic-turmerone. The fact that turmeric contains more than one potentially beneficial compound may explain why it has long been touted as a medicinal and psychological cure-all in some cultures.

The research has only been done in mice thus far, so it remains to be seen whether it will have promise for humans.
