“Short Sleepers” Function on Little Sleep
Scientists recently identified an extremely rare genetic mutation in people they are calling “short sleepers”—who can function well on six hours of sleep or less. These people are not sleep-deprived; their mutation means that they “genuinely thrive” on four to six hours of sleep a night, while maintaining a generally more positive attitude and even a higher tolerance for pain.
Famous short sleepers include Leonardo DaVinci and Martha Stewart. Stewart has been quoted as saying, “I find that when you have a real interest in life and a curious life, that sleep is not the most important thing.” Perhaps that’s because she doesn’t need as much sleep as the rest of us!

Do you know any short sleepers? My sister-in-law sleeps about 4 hours per night, and always has, yet she never lacks energy despite a busy and physical life of owning and running a large horse farm. I suspect she is one of these rare few who is a true short sleeper!
