Why Do We Vote?
Tomorrow many of us will head out and hit the polls, if we haven’t already mailed in our absentee ballots. But what drives those of us who vote to do so, when we know our single vote is unlikely to make a difference and it takes time and effort on our part?
This New York Times article gives a perspective, based in part on a study done in Switzerland. The conclusion: it may be that we go to the polls in self-interest, to be seen as “good citizens.” That would explain why making voting easier–as was done through an all-absentee system in Switzerland–can decrease voter turnout.
I’d love to hear what you think motivates people to vote!
